Bulgaria: Acting Deputy FM: Iran Note Acknowledged but No Grounds for Public Alarm in Bulgaria Acting Deputy Foreign Minister Marin Raykov

Acting Deputy Foreign Minister Marin Raykov has commented on the diplomatic note sent by Iran to Bulgaria, stressing that it should not be interpreted as a reason for public alarm. He stated that, although the document is a fact, it does not change the nature of Bulgaria’s current diplomatic or security position.

Raykov emphasized that Bulgaria continues to maintain fully intact diplomatic relations with Tehran and that communication between the two sides remains normal. He added that the Iranian authorities have been clearly informed that Bulgaria is not involved in any war and has no intention of joining military operations linked to the current regional escalation.

According to him, Bulgaria’s National Assembly has not adopted any decision that would commit the country to participation in conflict-related actions, including those referenced in the note. He stressed that such intentions do not exist and will not be pursued, contrasting Bulgaria’s position with that of other states that have made different parliamentary decisions.

The deputy minister also underlined that the aircraft present at Sofia’s Vasil Levski Airport are part of NATO’s forward deployment and training activities. He noted that NATO itself is not engaged in active warfare and that the aircraft stationed in Bulgaria are not combat aircraft nor involved in operational strikes.

Raykov rejected interpretations linking Bulgaria to military action, stating that no combat aircraft are operating over Bulgarian territory and none are being used for refueling missions connected to hostilities. He insisted that the situation should not be exploited to create fear among the public.

The issue was raised in parliament, where it was confirmed that Iran sent its note on March 18. The document reportedly referenced the presence of around 12 US KC-135 tanker aircraft stationed in Bulgaria, which Tehran claimed were being used to support operations connected to strikes against Iran as part of a broader US-Israeli campaign.

The Iranian message stated that such activities were viewed as hostile and that Iran reserved the right to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty, security and national interests under international law.

Bulgarian defense and government officials have previously acknowledged the presence of US KC-135R/T Stratotanker aircraft at Sofia Airport, describing them as part of NATO’s “Enhanced Vigilance Activities” and related training exercises.

Following the escalation of tensions, the acting government reiterated that Bulgaria is not a participant in the conflict and is not involved in any military actions. Officials also stated that the country is closely monitoring developments and prioritizing national security and public safety.

Defense authorities separately assessed that there is no direct military threat to Bulgaria, reinforcing Raykov’s position that the Iranian note does not alter the country’s security status or justify heightened concern among the population.
