American scientists have successfully developed a drug which can significantly help the global fight with AIDS.

The medicine, which has been developed for several years, is supposed to prevent high-risk target groups across the world.

The results of the extensive research, which are published in "New England Journal of Medicine", show that the new pill can decrease the potential risk of HIV infection. It has been carried out by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco.

Gay men at extremely high risk of HIV who participated in the study by taking the oral pill daily cut their risk of contracting the infection by almost 44 per cent.

"This discovery alters the HIV prevention landscape for ever," said Jim Pickett of the Aids Foundation of Chicago.

"The results are extremely important." Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization, commented
