Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, demanded sentences of life behind bars for people ordering acid attacks on other individuals.
Borisov spoke Saturday during a round table dedicated to preventing violence against women.
The amendment voiced by the PM will be included in the new Penal Code to be discussed Wednesday by the Parliamentary Legal Committee.
Borisov further asked for 35-year jail sentences for the perpetrators of such attacks, saying this type of a crime brings Bulgaria closer to Asia and distances it from Europe.
Other guests include the Speaker of the Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov. All participants gathered around the idea that acid attacks are a serious issue and there is a strong need of prevention.
Tsvetanov said that public support and draconian penalty measures are a must in the fight of this type of a crime.
It was reported during the discussions that 24 people have become victims of acid attacks in Bulgaria.
Only one person has been sentenced so far for ordering such attack.
