Bulgarian businessman Rumen Gunenski has stated he could not do anything about his son who was kidnapped in Sofia around 8 pm Monday night.

The 22-year-old Rumen Gunenski Jr was abducted by a group of masked men who forced him into a van close to his dormitory in the Studentski Grad Quarter.

In a short interview for Pro.bg TV, the father, whose name is also Rumen Gunenski, declared that no ransom had been demanded from him, and that he had no idea who and why had kidnapped his son.

Guninski Sr. is a town councilor from the Bulgarian Socialist Party in the town of Pravetz, to the northeast of Sofia. He is the owner of the Eztur firm, and is known as a rich businessman dealing with fuel trading, construction, and tourism. His business activities are mostly in Pravetz and the nearby town of Botevgrad.

Guninski has been exposed as an agent of the former State Security, i.e. the secret police of the communist regime.

He is also known to be close with tycoon Valentin Zlatev – one of the richest Bulgarians. In his interview for Pro.bg Guninski has denied any connection between his son’s abduction, and his connections with Zlatev.
