Varna's anti-mafia police have discovered EUR 20 000 in false banknotes, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry reported Friday.

In a special operation on Thursday evening 6 people were arrested and the EUR 50 banknotes were confiscated to help with the investigation. The money was discovered in plastic bags in an apartment and an Audi car in Varna.

A Swiss and a Romanian citizen were amongst the people who were arrested.

The arrests come hot on the heals of a joint operation between Spanish and Bulgarian police that busted the European Union's largest ever euro forging operation in the Central Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.

Seventeen people were arrested in and around Plovdiv, where police seized EUR 500 000 in fake notes on July 2.
