Bulgaria PM Sergey Stanishev has stated that the country is one of the only new members of the EU that has coped with the global financial crisis.

Stanishev spoke after meeting with the European Central Bank (ECB) governor Jean-Claude Trichet, who is on a visit in Sofia to mark the 130th anniversary since the establishment of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). The Bank chairman Ivan Iskrov also attended the meeting Saturday.

He said that he was proud with how Bulgaria had coped with the financial crisis by using its own resources and by not turning to the IMF for help.

Stanishev concluded by stating that Bulgaria is on course to join the eurozone and will do so when it is fully ready, he also added that the country's currency board will remain pegged to the Euro until that time.

Trichet said Friday that Bulgaria should be cautious about joining the eurozone, stating that it is crucial that all requirements are met first.
