Netherlands Cancels Koninginnedag Celebrations, Queen “Speechless”

The Netherlands have canceled all celebrations for Koninginnedag (Queen's Day) at home and abroad over the car incident in Apeldoorn.

The Dutch Embassy in Sofia has also canceled the reception it had planned for Thursday evening over the incident which left four dead, and several more injured when a car crashed into a crowd waiting for Netherlands Queen Beatrix in Apeldoorn.

"What began as a great day has ended in a terrible tragedy that has shocked us all deeply," Queen Beatrix said in a televised statement.

"We are speechless that something so terrible could have happened. My family, and I think everybody in the country, sympathize with the victims, their families and friends and all who have been hit so hard by this accident," the Netherlands Queen said.
