Each member state of the EU, should decide on its own whether or not to accept detainees from the US prison at Guantanamo Bay.

This became clear Monday during the visit of the European Commission Vice-President, Jacques Barrot, to Washington DC.

Barrot, accompanied on his trip by the Czech Republic Interior Minister, Ivan Langer, who represents the Czech EU Presidency, were to discuss the potential taking in of innocent inmates from the Bush Administration prison at Guantanamo by EU countries. The topic of full reciprocity in visa-free travel between the EU and the US would be also discussed.

"We will need help because many of the detainees cannot safely, for themselves or others, be sent back to the countries from which they came" because they would face imprisonment or other consequences,US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said

EU officials "stressed that there are countries willing to accept detainees from Guantanamo" as well as "some countries that don't want to accept detainees," Barrot explained. In his words, European Union nations want "total transparency" and "maximum information" about Guantanamo Bay detainees before accepting any for resettlement after their release.

"Only after we have enough information, that we will circulate to member states, only then can a decision be taken," Czech Interior Minister Ivan Langer said

Many European countries are deeply concerned about having people who pose a potential security risk at large in the 25-nation Schengen region, where border controls are minimal, Deutsche Welle commented.

245 of the Guantanamo detainees, formerly referred to by the Bush Administration as "enemy combatants" will not be charged in US courts. Any decision to take in Guantanamo inmates will finally be approved by the governments of the respective EU member states that have been approached by the Obama Administration on the matter.
