Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has vowed to draw attention to the fight against human traffickers during Thursday’s European Council meeting.

EU leaders are holding an emergency summit to find ways to cope with the Mediterranean migrants crisis.

Speaking before heading to Brussels to attend the summit, Borisov argued that European and international services had not done enough to address the problem.

“Bulgaria is working on the matter and we have reached a fairly advanced stage of developing a solution. I will propose a system to the EU colleagues,” he said, as cited by the press office of the government and dnevnik.bg.

Borisov pointed out that although the aid for frontline countries was an essential issue, it was most important to stop the bloodshed that was causing the waves of migrants.

He said that what was happening now was the result of cutthroats coming to power in many countries instead of the much-anticipated rule of democracy.

“We must now step in to create normal living conditions in these countries so that people stop running away,” Borisov declared.
He said that a potential increase in refugee numbers would be worrying and would expose Bulgaria to risk.

Borisov also made clear that he would meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker before the summit to try to negotiate an increase in EU funding for agriculture.
