Bulgarian FM: Balkans EU Integration Vital to Combat Nationalism

The EU integration of the Western Balkans is vital to vanquishing nationalism that is on the rise accross Europe, according to Bulgarian foreign affairs minister Nikolay Mladenov.

He commented on the unwelcome effects of rising European nationalism, but underscored that the dangers from it are even greater in the volatile Balkans.

"There is a risk that the present majority of Balkan people - who now are open to EU-integration - will face disappointment and drift to radical quarters, thus endangering peace in the region," said the Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Mladenov stated that EU-hopefuls in the Western Balkans - including Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina - should work together in the process, for that is the only viable option for success.
