Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev announced that the new metro section through Poduyane is expected to be launched in July, with construction works already reaching around 98% completion. The new line is seen as part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility in the Bulgarian capital.

According to Terziev, the 3-kilometer extension will significantly shorten travel times for residents of the “Levski”, “Suhata Reka” and “Hadzhi Dimitar” districts. He emphasized that it will bring “more peace, predictability and time for the family,” while reducing the daily pressure of commuting.

The mayor noted that the project is expected to ease traffic in the area, with forecasts pointing to around a 25% reduction in car use locally. “In a few months, tens of thousands of people will spend less time traveling and more time on the things that matter to them,” he wrote on Facebook.

The new infrastructure includes three stations: “Georgi Asparuhov Stadium”, “Vitinya” and “Gen. Vladimir Vazov”, which are designed to be modern, accessible and integrated into their surroundings. A buffer parking facility for around 100 vehicles is also planned to support commuters from nearby areas.

Terziev also pointed out that passenger numbers are expected to rise significantly, potentially exceeding 500,000 metro users daily once the section becomes operational.

Alongside the metro expansion, the city is continuing upgrades to surface transport, including new electric buses, trolleybuses and modern trams, as well as reorganized routes aimed at improving efficiency and reducing pollution.

He added that construction of the metro extension in the “Slatina” area is ongoing, with further expansions in preparation, as Sofia moves toward a more integrated transport system functioning as a single network.
