The production team behind the upcoming film about Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov has unveiled early impressions of the project, along with its official dual-title release strategy aimed at different audiences. The presentation took place on April 9 at ARTVENT Hub in Sofia, marking the film’s first major public introduction.
The movie will be released under two distinct titles depending on the market. In Bulgaria, it will appear as “Stoichkov – Once Upon a Time in Bulgaria,” while international audiences will see it as “Stoichkov – Against All Odds.” According to the creative team, the approach is intended to reflect both a national narrative and a universal story of ambition and success.
Director Martin Makariev explained that the dual titles offer two perspectives on the same life story. He described “Once Upon a Time in Bulgaria” as evoking a sense of nostalgia and personal formation, while “Against All Odds” frames Stoichkov’s journey as one of perseverance and global achievement. “These are two perspectives on the same story,” Makariev said.
At the event, the team also presented three key visual concepts inspired by defining stages of Stoichkov’s career: his time with the Bulgarian national team, his career at CSKA Sofia, and his achievements with FC Barcelona. Each visual direction is intended to highlight different emotional and biographical layers of his journey, from his beginnings in Bulgaria to international recognition.
Attendees were also shown material from the official photo shoot for the film’s posters, offering an initial look at its visual style and the cinematic portrayal of the central character.
The role of Stoichkov is portrayed by Kristo Stoichkov, who was selected through the television reality format “You’re Already Playing… Stoichkov,” broadcast on NOVA. The show served as the casting process and marked the beginning of his preparation for the role.
Speaking about the challenge, Kristo Stoichkov noted the demands of embodying such a well-known figure. “Preparing for the role of Stoichkov means getting into a rhythm, discipline and character that do not tolerate compromise,” he said, adding that audience expectations add both pressure and motivation.
The presentation also coincided with a personal moment, as the lead actor marked his birthday together with the team and guests at the event.
The film, directed by Martin Makariev, is being developed with a focus on Stoichkov’s path from Bulgaria to global football prominence. The creative team includes Alexander Sano and Vladimir Pamukov, with the script written by Georgi Angelov.
Positioned as a national-scale production, “Stoichkov – Once Upon a Time in Bulgaria / Against All Odds” aims to portray both the individual story of the footballer and a broader narrative of determination and national identity, with ambitions for both domestic and international audiences.
