Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has delivered a rare nationwide address warning that the economic consequences of the ongoing Middle East conflict will be long-lasting, calling on citizens to help reduce pressure on fuel supplies by using public transport.

The speech, broadcast simultaneously across major television and radio networks, was compared to national addresses delivered during major crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2008 global financial downturn. Reuters reported that such direct appeals to the public are uncommon outside periods of major disruption.

Albanese said Australia, which relies on imports for around 90% of its fuel, is already experiencing sharp increases in petrol prices and shortages, which he linked to the US-Israeli war against Iran and tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz blockade.

He noted that although Australia is not directly involved in the conflict, the country is still bearing the economic impact. “I understand it’s hard to be optimistic at the moment,” he said, adding that fuel prices for petrol and diesel have reached unprecedented levels due to the war, with effects expected to continue for months.

The prime minister urged Australians to act responsibly, advising against panic buying or excessive fuel storage ahead of the Easter period, which begins this week. He also asked motorists to refuel only as needed and consider the wider impact on communities and essential services.

Albanese further encouraged a shift in daily commuting habits, suggesting that where possible people should use trains, buses, or trams instead of private vehicles in the coming weeks to help ease demand on fuel supplies.
