The European Commission has warned the government in Romania not to ruin the results achieved in combating corruption.

In a specific statement, the EC pointed outs that the latest events might have a negative effect on evaluations in the next monitoring report on the country.

“The EC will study in-depth the emergency decree in the Penal Code and the Amnesty Act in Romania,” wrote in a statement the President of the EC Jean-Claude Juncker and his Deputy Frans Timmermans.

The measures adopted by the new socialist government in Romania led to widespread civil protests due to apprehensions that these will give the opportunity to several Romanian politicians to avoid penal prosecution.

“The fight against corruption must be reinforced, not undermined,” warned Juncker and Timmermans. They also reminded that the abolition in stages of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) in the judicial system depends on how irreversible the process is.

“Every step that undermines this process or weakens penal prosecution of corruption as a crime will be reflected in the future evaluations of Romania,” added Juncker and Timmermans.

In the last monitoring reports, Romania received ten and Bulgaria 17 recommendations to be implemented if they wish monitoring by the EC to be abolished faster.
