The military force, which Germany plans to send to Syria to fight the Islamic State group, won’t cooperate with Syrian government troops, a German Defence Ministry spokesman has said.
"There will be no cooperation with [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad and there will be no cooperation with troops loyal to al-Assad," Jens Flosdorff said, according to DPA.
Germany pledged last week to join the international anti-Islamic State coalition, in a sign of solidarity with France, which has stepped up airstrikes against the jihadist group in Syria that claimed responsibility for the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris.
According to government documents cited by German public broadcaster ARD on Monday, the planned German operations in Syria could cost EUR 134 M next year, DPA said.
German army chief of staff Volker Wieker told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday that the German air force would provide four to six Tornado jets that could be stationed at two locations, Talks were underway with Jordan and Turkey about using the airbases in Incirlik and Amman, he added.
In addition to Tornado reconnaissance jets the German cabinet plans to deploy a refuelling aircraft and a frigate.
"From a military point of view, some 1,200 soldiers will be needed to operate the planes and ships," Deutsche Welle quoted Wieker as telling Bild am Sonntag.
Wieker also said that the deployment would be able to begin very quickly once the German parliament had approved a mandate for the operation.
