A hatchling was born into a family of Egyptian vultures living in Bulgaria this week, helping preserve a species whose numbers are rapidly declining across the region, a non-profit has said.
Growing by the hour, the baby vulture is part of the LIFE+ project, which is run by the Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds (BDSP, a Birdlife partner) but is carried out jointly with partner organizations from Greece (HOS, WWF) and the UK's Royal Society for Protection of Birds.
The project allows live view inside the family's nest located near Provadiya, Northeastern Bulgaria, the BSPB says in a press statement. The first days of the young vulture can be thus watched by bird lovers and professionals alike.
Egyptian vultures are thought to be one of the most endangered bird species in Europe, with a population that has dwindled by 80 percent over the past three decades.
