Bulgaria: Bulgaria Voices Support for Macedonia’s Territorial Integrity

Bulgaria is backing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighbouring Macedonia, President Rosen Plevneliev said on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists in Albania’s capital Tirana, where Bulgaria took over the rotating presidency of the Southeastern European Cooperation Process (SEECP), Plevneliev said that Sofia will propose the adoption of a joint declaration reaffirming the inviolability of state borders in southeastern Europe.

Borders in the Balkans must be brought down rather than redrawn, Plevneliev said. He spoke several days after Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said ideas of Macedonia’s partitioning between Albania and Bulgaria had been floated – a suggestion dismissed as "extremely irresponsible" by Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov.

“We believe that regional cooperation and reconciliation are ultimate values. We are working to enable each country to contribute to the stability and progress of the Balkans region,” said Plevneliev.

Enhancing transport and energy links in southeastern Europe, promoting the principles of democracy and security and efficiently tackling migration will be Bulgaria’s priorities during its term at the helm of the SEECP, Plevneliev said.

Bulgaria will host the next SEECP summit due to take place in mid-2016.
