An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rattled southern Greece early on Friday.

The quake struck at 6:45 a.m. local time and had an epicenter located 120km east of Sparta, according to preliminary reports of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

There were no immediate reports of damages or victims.

The quake was felt on the island of Crete and in Athens and was followed by a 4.7-magnitude aftershocks some three minutes later

According to preliminary estimates of the US Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.
