One of the most emblematic inventions, the Rubik's Cube, turns 40 years.
In 1974, Hungarian professor of design Erno Rubik creates a 3-D puzzle, which goes on to sweep the world. Initially, it is named the Magic Cube. It gains ground in the 1980s, and by 2009 it has sold over 350 million cubes worldwide.
On the competitive side, the Rubik's Cube has attracted people from all around, in as many as 1,700 international competitions. The world record is held by Dutch teenager Mats Valk, solving it in 5.55 seconds.
When Rubik invented his cube, he had little idea how to solve it. No matter which way he turned the puzzle, the colors seemed only to get more mixed up. Still, he refused to believe that it couldn't be solved, The Guardian reported.
The cube received patent in 1975 and was renamed after his inventor in 1980, when it made its official debut on the international toy fairs.
