Some 11.9 M new cars were registered in the EU last year, a decline of 1.7% compared with the previous year, according to statistics.
This makes 2013 the worst year in volume terms since 1995, data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on Thursday showed.
Bulgarian new-car sales reported a 0.3% annual decline with some 20 000 vehicles sold in 2013.
The biggest decrease in sales of new cars was registered in Cyprus (nearly 35%), followed by the Netherlands (17%) and Romania (13%).
Meanwhile, some EU countries continue to register growth in sales of new cars.
The biggest growth in 2013 was reported by Estonia (13%), followed by Portugal (13%) and the UK (10.8%).
Most EU markets reported growth in December. Sales surged 23.8% in the UK and by 18.2% in Spain. In France and Germany, registrations advanced 9.4% and 5.4%.
The automobile industry is of prime significance for the EU. According to statistics of ACEA, the EU automobile industry provides 5% of the employment in the union.
