The destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons has begun on Sunday, monitored by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The expert team have witnessed the destruction of missile warheads, aerial bombs, and mixing and filling equipment, reports CNN.

The OPCW experts filed an interim report last month confirming that the nerve agent sarin had been used in attack on August 21 near Damascus.

The U.N. Security Council, capping a dramatic month of diplomacy, voted unanimously September 27 to require Syria to eliminate its arsenal of chemical weapons -- or face consequences.

Experts tasked with overseeing the process entered Syria on Tuesday. They are expected to visit over 50 chemical stockpile sites and inspect the disarmament.

The mixing and filling equipment should be destroyed by November 1.
