Georgi Parvanov, the former president of Bulgaria and the former leader of Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP,) insists on the emergency convocation of the Socialists' National Party Council.
The motives of the prominent Socialist are that the party experienced serious crisis due to its poor management.
"I insist on the urgent convening of the National Party Council for assessing the situation that was created as a result of short-sighted, irresponsible actions of the BSP leadership," the former president said.
Parvanov demanded holding a discussion session where the actions of current Socialist leadership, including party leader, Sergey Stanishev, and of Kristiyan Vigenin, Yavor Getchev and Denitza Zlateva, will be considered.
"We owe honest and fast answers to the questions that not only the protesters ask, but many of our countrymen as well. Arrogance and disregard for different opinions create not only pressure but also a crisis of trust in the government. I will justify my position for immediate change at the meeting of the National Council," Parvanov wrote in his statement.
Last week there were divisions within the ranks of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist-led Coalition for Bulgaria. Some of the left-wing MPs blasted Stanishev for his close cooperation with the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedom (DPS,) which, they say, had turned into addiction.
The discontent in the "red" ranks exacerbated even further after Friday's nomination of controversial media mogul and politician Delyan Peevski for the Head of the National Security Agency, DANS.
Former President Parvanov is a longtime internal party opponent of Stanishev and is among the main contenders for the leadership of BSP.
Parvanov is a former chair of the largest Bulgarian leftist formation BSP, in the late 1990s, and two-term President of Bulgaria in 2002-2012.
After ending his second term as President in January 2012, Parvanov launched a campaign to reclaim the Socialists' leader position.
However, at the party congress May 19-20, he felt his standing was not strong enough and withdrew his candidacy, paving the way for Stanishev's reelection.
Parvanov saluted rival Sergey Stanishev for his victory in the election for President of the Party of European Socialists, PES in October 2012.
