Anti-mafia police have seized over 150 firearms from the home of a 51-year-old man and from a Sofia-based warehouse, the Interior Ministry's press office announced on Friday.
As part of ongoing pre-trial proceedings, officers of the General Directorate for Combat of Organized Crime, supervised by the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, raided several premises used by the man, who had a permit for collecting and storing firearms.
The special forces searched the home of the 51-year-old man and found that the weapons for which he had a license were not stored there.
At the same time, the search yielded 16 revolvers, one pistol and 14 rifles and carbines for which he could present no permit.
The officers found out that the missing weapons were stored at a warehouse of a Sofia-based company in which the man was an associate.
The inspection of the warehouse at the Malashevtsi residential district showed that the firearms were there, but there was also a stash of other weapons for which the man had no permit.
Over 150 firearms were seized, including 63 revolvers, 52 pistols, 25 carbines and 16 rifles, two machine pistols, an almost full Kalashnikov rifle kit and 1500 pieces of ammunition of different calibers.
A substantial part of the confiscated illegal weapons were found to have been made after 1900 and were suited to modern ammunition.
The raid also yielded a set of antique edged weapons including swords and a knife.
Experts are yet to determine the cultural and historic value of the antique weapons and the period to which they belong.
The investigation into the origin of the illegal weapons continues.
