Alexander Galimov, the last ice hockey player who had survived last week's tragic plane crash in Russia that wiped out the whole Lokomotiv Yaroslavl squad, passed away Monday.
"Alexander Galimov died from severe burns in the burn center of the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery," a report of the Institute administration has said.
"We did everythng possible to save him," burn specialist Andrei Alekseev said, as cited by RIA Novosti.
The death toll of the hellish air crash has now grown to 44.
Galimov had succeeded in walking out of the plane wreckage, even though he had who had suffered burns to 90% of his body, police officers have reported.
Alexander Galimov was a member of the silver-medal winning Russian U20 team at the 2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He also played for the Russia men's national ice hockey team in the 2009–10 and 2010–11 Euro Hockey Tours.
The only survivor still alive, plane engineer Alexander Sizov is staying at the Moscow Sklifosofsky Institute. His condition is serious but stable, according to Kiyv Post.
Last Wednesday, witnesses saw the plane, a Yak-42, burst into flames shortly after taking off. Investigators found wreckage of the plane in the Volga river.

A member of the team – Ruslan Salei – was not aboard the plane as he arrived in Minsk ahead of the squad.
