The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Bulgaria' s Black Sea capital Varna entered in tough negotiations with coroners, who refused to do an autopsy in a murder case.
The information was reported by the Regional Prosecutor in Varna, Vladimir Chavdarov, who says the pathologists refused to work even on the case in question, involving the murder of a 6-year-old boy.
The coroners in Bulgaria are on strike over deplorable work conditions, unpaid wages and low pay. The protests are particularly pronounced in Varna, where for 3 days now, coroners from the "Saint Anna" and "Saint Marina" hospitals refuse to assist the investigation. One of them has agreed after all to work on the child's murder case.
Later Wednesday, the coroners are scheduled to meet with the prosecutors to negotiate payment of their salaries and resuming work.
The body of 6-year-old Stefan Stefanov was found in a ravine in Varna Tuesday wrapped in a black thrash bag. The child was declared missing on May 14 – he disappeared from the street in front of his house.
The initial probe revealed Stefan had been strangled. There are still no suspects in the case.
