Bulgaria: Egypt Press: Clash of Civilizations Decided UNESCO Elections Bulgarian former Foreign Minister Irina Bokova delivers a speech after being elected Director General of the UNESCO at the organization headquarters in Paris, France, 22 Sept 2009.

Egyptian media have criticized severely the election of Bulgaria's candidate Irina Bokova as head of UNESCO instead of the Egyptian candidate, acting Culture Minister Faruq Hosni.

Most of the Egyptian newspapers cite the failure of their bidder to get elected as a proof of the "clash of civilizations", in which Israel and the Western states stand against the rest of the world.

"The American, European and Jewish lobby failed Faruq Hosni after a decent performance on part of the Egyptian delegation," wrote the independent daily, Al Masry Al Youm, as cited by BGNES.

"Egypt's candidate for the position was faced with severe campaign against him by the US administration under Jewish pressure," the Al Ahrar paper declared.

"Hosni's campaign has met with the uncivilized pressure on part of the Jewish intellectuals in France," the state newspaper Al Ahram El Mesay said.

The general voice of the media in Egypt has stressed the fact that Hosni's alleged anti-Semitism has been used to deprive him of the top UNESCO position.

Bulgaria's Irina Bokova beat Hosni in the fifth round of the voting with 31 vs. 27 votes.
