The municipal Councilmen from BSP demanded an emergency meeting with Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, over the way the City Hall deals with waste removal.

The members of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) insist the Prosecutor's Office asks Sofia's Mayor to verify statements that the packing of the waste was a way to drain money.

The socialists will further request from the Prosecutor to offer information about corruption practices at the City Hall.

The BSP Councilmen insist the Suhodol landfill remaining capacity will last only until the end of the year and the trash will need then to be again packaged and transported away.

"Do not waste my time with Stanishev," Mayor Borisov and informal leader of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party, told reporters when asked about the latest waste saga developments.

According to Borisov, Bulgaria's Prime Minister and BSP leader, Sergey Stanishev, wanted to privatize the waste recycling plant and then give it to Rumen Gaytanski AKA the Wolfe.

The Sofia City Hall took a firm stand against the May 8 government's plans for a shut-down of the capital only operational landfill by 2010.

They say that bill that supposedly aims the collecting and recycling of waste in the capital in a sustainable way will actually lead to more frozen EU aid, fines and another garbage crisis.

Representatives of the crisis headquarters, established by Stanishev in a bid to organize better garbage collection in the capital, have suggested that a new landfill is open to house the capital garbage by the time a plant for recycling it is built. They however refused to disclose its location or cost.

Residents of Suhodol district in Sofia have repeatedly staged rallies, demanding the closing of the dumpsite on the western outskirts of Bulgaria's capital, citing health and environmental concerns.

The dumpsite was reopened at the beginning of December 2007 after the environment ministry backed the controversial option to prevent a looming garbage crisis in the capital.
