Luxury estates in Sofia's affluent suburbs are being measured and described in detail by Bulgarian authorities.
For the sixth consecutive day, special teams from the State Agency for National Security, (DANS), the Prosecutors Office, the National Revenue Agency (NRA) and the Customs Agency are conducting an action in Sofia's Boyana, Dragalevtsi and Simeonovo suburbs.
The action has been ordered on March 23, by the Sofia Deputy Prosecutor, Roman Vasilev.
The main task is to verify how the huge properties have been acquired.
The action had become necessary after the Registrar Agency at the Justice Ministry failed to submit to the Prosecutor's Office complete information about deals for over BGN half million for the 2004-2008 period, the Bulgarian information agency BGNES reports.
The special teams have 10 days to make a tour of the suburbs and describe in details the mansions. Then the properties will be immediately checked by the City Hall and NRA.Owners will need to evidence the source of their wealth and show proof of income corresponding to the value of their luxury houses.
The agents are also describing and listing expensive automobiles in the affluent suburbs.
Cars with US license plates are specially checked for paid customs fees and excise.
According to Bulgarian law, a car with foreign license plates can be driven in the country only for six months, then fees must be paid and tags replaced.
In case enough evidence is collected against them, owners of expensive estates and cars will face money laundering charges.
