The Bulgarian National Statistical Institute released prliminary data on the last count of the Bulgarian population from March, 2001. The results are from a 2% from the surveyed or 196,000 from the Bulgarians. According to the figures, the number of Bulgarians, aged under twenty decreased substantially. They are currently only 21,8% of the population. In the beginning of last century, the percentage of that age group used to be 51%. The Bulgarians, aged over 60 are 22% from the Bulgarian population. Their percentage rose a lot compared to the figure of 8,4% from last century. `The trend is rather worrying and unfortunately it is expected to continue during the next years, considering the birth rate in Bulgaria, `Ivan Balev, Director of the Statistical Institute told journalists. The Bulgarian ethnic group comprises 6,661 million people. 758,000, 9.5% from the population identify themselves as part of the ethnic turks group. The roma ethnic group comprises 366,000 or 4.6% from the Bulgarian population.
