At least 23 troops have been killed as the Russian Airborne Troops training centre barracks collapsed in the Omsk region on Sunday.

This was announced by a spokesman of the Russian Defence Ministry on Monday, TASS news agency reports.

A total of 42 servicemen have been retrieved from the rubble, with 23 of them found dead.

A total of 19 servicemen have been admitted to hospital, while five remain under the rubble and the search for them is ongoing.

According to a regional law enforcement source, the accident might have been caused by violations during repair works.

The barrack in the village of Svetly recently underwent repairs and it is possible that errors occurred, including a change in the design of the building.

At the time of the collapse, there were 337 servicemen inside.
