Leaders across the globe have reacted to the events of Thursday evening when prominent Russian oppositioner Boris Nemtsov was killed.
US President Barack Obama condemned the "brutal murder" in a statement and urged a "prompt, impartial and transparent investigation" .
Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul called the murder "one of the most shocking things I can remember happening in Russia for a long, long time."
The Council of Europe's Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland wrote on Twitter he was "shocked and appalled".
Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko wrote on Facebook that he was shocked at the death of Nemtsov: "one of the few I can call a friend."
"He was a bridge between Ukraine and Russia. The murder has been premeditated. I don't think it is a coincidence. I have no doubt the murderers will be brought to justice. Sooner or later.
