Disgruntled residents of Bulgaria's Black Sea city of Varna booed Sunday former Regional Minister, Lilyana Pavlova, who is leading the ticket of the centrist GERB party.

The participants in yet another weekend protest rally blockaded the building of the Varna theater, where the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, was introducing their candidates in the May 12 snap general elections, the BGNES news agency reported.

Some of the demonstrators were even able to burst inside, but were pushed out by riot police.

Upon leaving the building, GERB candidates and officials were met with hissing and shouts "mafia" and "janissaries."

Pavlova is considered one of the strongest bidders on GERB's ballots. During her term as Regional Minister she enjoyed high approval ratings. Former Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, nominated her for his deputy to replace Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, after the latter submitted his resignation. The idea failed to materialize as on the next day (February 20), Borisov announced his decision to resign, following huge protest rallies across the country.

Increased police presence is reported in downtown Varna, near the theater building, where demonstrators have erected a symbolic wooden gallows.
