Bulgaria: Most Bulgarians Would Flee Buildings if Quake Hits - Poll File photo

Some 58% of Bulgarians would escape the buildings they are situated in and move to at a safe distance if an earthquake occurs, according to a poll conducted by the local National Center for Study of Public Opinion.

Some 40% would try to find a safe place within the buildings and wait until the earthquake is over.

The poll suggests that the latter approach would be employed by women, elderly people and those with a higher education.

A total of 9% of those surveyed have admitted that they have no idea what to do if an an earthquake strikes.

Some 46% would rely on TV news for information in the quake's aftermath, while 26% would listen to radio and 14% would rely on the Internet.

The poll was conducted after the 5.8-6 magnitude earthquake that shook the country on May 22.
