Bulgaria: Bulgaria Authorities Issue 'What to Do during Earthquakes' Instructions

The Bulgarian police and national seismology survey agency have issued official instructions following the strong earthquake that rattled Bulgaria Tuesday, sending multiple aftershocks.

Here you can read the English translation of the instructions, as published by the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior in consultation with National Institute in Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

During a seismically calm period:

You must have prepared in an appropriate place at home a portable electric light, bag for documents and particularly valuable objects, a small bag of needed medicines, a piece of warm clothing for everyone and a reserve of some food and water.

Fit furniture at home firmly and do not leave heavy and easily falling objects at high places.

Keep flamable substances in firmly closed containers.

Keep the exit to your home open, do not jam it with belongings.

Look and determine which the safest place in your home is. Keep in mind that during an earthquake, the most dangerous places are balconies, external walls, stairwells and elevators.

Prepare a plan for the way your family is going to act.

Determine a person to contact the members of your family, who resides in a different region from you.

When you feel the first quake:

You ought not to leave the building in which you are; leave it only if you judge that you can be in the open in about 10 seconds.

Go the the safets place in the building - under the door, close to an internal wall, column, or under a solid table or bed.

After the first vibrations, shaking will increase. Keep calm and do not run towards stairs and elevators.

If you are on the street, keep away from buildings and transmission lines and poles.

If the earthquake surprises you while driving, stop in an open and safe place and wait.

If in the public transportation, it is better to wait for the end of the quake inside the vehicle.

After the end of the first quake:

Turn off electricity, gas and water.

Take your prepared emergency luggage and quickly leave the building.

Go down the stairs - do not use the elevator.

Let mothers with children and elderly people go first.

After going out of the building, go away to some open place, at least at a distance equal to the height of the closest building.

Do not stand below electricity transmission or any other types of lines.

Offer emergency help, if somebody around is injured.

Mark places in which there are people left beneath the rubble. Help, if that is possible.

Follow up information published by media, in particular local radio stations. Follow instructions by the fire department, police, and other competent organs. Preserve public order.
