Two Bulgarian Officers Arrested for Bribery at Gyueshevo Border Crossing
In a recent operation organized by The Directorate-General for Border Police, a significant development unfolded late on March 23 at the Gyueshevo border crossing
Toma Tomov, former socialist MP and former Regional Prosecutor in the northwestern town of Oryahovo, has been sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment for taking a bribe of USD 500 to stop an investigation.
Friday's ruling of the Sofia City Court also envisages an eight-year ban from public posts.
Tomov, together with former Deputy Regional Prosecutor Dimitar Vikentiev and former investigating magistrate Tseko Krivachkov, were charged with accepting a USD 500 bribe of from Rahim Ali and Mustafa Mustafa , who wanted to avoid being sued.
Vikentiev was also found guilty of obtaining testimony through illegal means.
He was handed down a 6-year prison term plus a ban from public office for 9 years.
Krivachkov was sentenced to 4 years in prison and was banned ban from holding public office for 7 years.
The verdict is not final and can be appealed before the Sofia Appellate Court
Tomov, Vikentiev and Krivachkov will share the court costs of BGN 238.
After hearing the verdict, the former MP of the left-wing Coalition for Bulgaria said that he had written a complaint long ago and that he had found numerous irregularities in the trial against him, the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) reported.
Tomov suggested that the guilty verdict would be cancelled by the higher-instance court.
