Volcano Eruption Triggers Urgent Evacuations of Thousands in Indonesia
Indonesia is grappling with a mounting crisis as rescue teams mobilize to evacuate thousands of people following a series of volcanic eruptions that have rattled the region
The plume of ash from Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano will reach the UK Tuesday and may cover Spain and France on Thursday, according to British experts.
Volcanic ash would cover all of Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern Britain Tuesday morning, according to the British Meteorology Office. Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has warned flights in the UK and Ireland may be disrupted.
Last year, ash clouds from another Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, led to the closure of a large section of European airspace. Governments feared that ash particles could cause aircraft engines to fail, and the closure caused chaos to air travellers.
Even though Saturday's eruption was much bigger and more intensive than the one in 2010, Grimsvotn is considered not as likely to cause danger as its ash is more coarse and falls to the ground faster, hence is not expected to stay as long in the air as in the Eyjafjallajokull eruption.
