Bulgaria is going to be included in the European system for extreme weather alerts “Meteoalarm,” beginning Tuesday, March 23.
The information is reported by the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The system presents a 4-color-coded map indicating the level of warnings about severe weather, such as heavy rain with risk of flooding, severe thunderstorms, gale-force winds, heat waves, forest fires, fog, snow or extreme cold with blizzards, avalanches or severe coastal tides. The colors used on the website maps indicate the severity of the danger and its possible impact. On the European map each participating country is colored consistent with the highest color assigned to a current warning.
Green means no particular awareness of the weather is required; yellow shows potentially dangerous weather; orange indicates that unusual meteorological phenomena have been forecast with damage and casualties likely to happen; red means the weather is very dangerous and exceptionally intense meteorological phenomena have been forecast. Major damage and accidents are likely, in many cases with threat to life and limb, over a wide area.
The access to the map will be free of charge through the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology website. The alerts are for the current and the following day.
On the map of Bulgaria, in addition to the color codes, symbols will indicate the type of expected severe weather for each region of the country.
