The UNESCO General Conference is formally sealing Thursday the appointment of Bulgaria's Irina Bokova as the Director General of the organization.
Irina Bokova is Bulgaria’s Ambassador to France and UNESCO. She won the elections for the head of the organization on September 22, 2009.
Bokova’s election was the first one that took five rounds after on the fourth round she and Egypt’s candidate, Culture Minister Faruq Hosni had equal number of votes. The Bulgarian Ambassador triumphed with 31 votes vs. 27 votes for Hosni.
Bokova is the first woman and the first Eastern European to chair UNESCO.
