Bulgaria's National Revenue Agency and the Customs Agency have started 24-hour monitoring of nine key border crossing points of the country.
The joint inspections of the two state agencies are intended to prevent contraband and to monitor primarily the imports of high-risk goods such as fuels and grain.
The customs inspectors are going to check the amounts and values of the imported goods, whereas the NRA officials are then going to follow up with secondary inspections on what happens with the goods once they enter Bulgaria, the Customs Agency press service announced.
The inspections will seek to find out whether the importers and their contractors report their actual turnover and whether they pay their due Value-Added Tax.
Cracking down on contraband and tax evasion is a cornerstone of the policies of Finance Minister Simeon Djankov and the GERB government which are intended to raise state revenue.
