The Mayor of the southern Bulgarian city of Kurdzhali Hasan Azis opened Friday a park named "Kurdzhali" in the US city of Elkheart, Indiana.
Kurdzhali and Elkheart have been sister cities since 2002. The naming of the park in the American city after Kurdzhali was initiated by Elkheart's local authorities.
The ceremony was also attended by the Mayor of Elkheart Dick Moore, and his predecessor David Miller.
"It is great to hear Kurdzhali's name overseas", Hasan Azis said at the event. He has invited his American counterpart for the opening of the newly built George Washington street in downtown Kurdzhali.
Apart from Elkhart, Indiana, the southern Bulgarian city also has sister city programs with East Straffordshire in England, Vladimir in Russia, Komotini, Filipi, and Sufli in Greece, and Tekirdag and Gaazi Osman Pasha in Turkey.
