Three candidates are to fight for the position of the Chair of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) as their applications were submitted Monday, which is the last day for nominations.

The nominees are Professor Nikola Sabotinov, which currently chairing BAS temporarily, Professor Alexander Petrov, who is the Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Academy and Professor Borisslav Boyanov.

The Elections for the new Chair of BAS will take place on June 18, and before that the candidates need to submit their CVs and programs for the development of the institution.

The early elections are held after the third reelection of Professor Ivan Yuhnovski for Chair sparked heated debate about its legality. The choice was attacked because it violated the requirement that the Chair-elect should be under 70 years of age.

Eventually, Yunovksi himself resigned in mid March paving the way for new elections.
