Kyrgyzstan's Old Parliament Suspends Work

World | March 28, 2005, Monday // 00:00

The Legislative Assembly, the lower house of Kyrgyzstan's previous parliament, is suspending its work, Legislative Assembly Speaker Ishenbai Kadyrbekov said on Monday. It's a political, not a legislative decision, made for the sake of stabilizing the situation and in the interests of the people, and in order not to set two sides of the legislative authority against each other, he said. This was decided after Central Elections Commission declared Kyrgyzstan's new parliament for legitimate on Monday. Earlier on Monday Omurek Tekebayev has been elected speaker of Kyrgyzstan's new unicameral parliament. His nomination was backed by a majority of the deputies.
