SA Ambassador: We Celebrate Nelson Mandela – Our Collective Dream
The Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa H.E. Vanessa Calvert gives insight on the meaning of the Nelson Mandela International Day, to her, South Africa and the world.
SOFIA - South African Embassy requests all members of the public to honor the Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July 2018. We call upon members of the society from all walks of life to spend 67 minutes of their time, on Nelson Mandela’s birthday - 18 July to perform duties or activities in service to our communities. This symbolizes the 67 years of his life, which Mandela dedicated to the service of humanity, fighting for freedom, justice and peace. The 2018 Mandela Day, significantly, marks the centenary celebration of the birth of this legendary icon and one of the greatest leaders of the African soil. This provides a unique opportunity for people around the world to reflect on his life and times and to promote his legacy.
Nelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world. It was launched on 18 July, in 2009 unanimously by the UN General Assembly.
18 July is also a date signifying the closeness and the similarities between our countries and people. It is also the birth date of Bulgaria’s icon of freedom, one of Bulgaria’s greatest heroes – Vassil Levski, who also fought for liberation, justice, a “pure and sacred republic”.
On 18 July you can spend 67 minutes of your time by: helping elderly people; providing food to those in need; spending time with disadvantaged children; donating to meaningful causes, etc. It is a long list, and it is up to you to choose how to spend 67 minutes of your time for a worthy cause on 18 July.
Our Embassy will spend its 67 minutes by interacting with orphaned children at the Agapedia Foundation and by donating reading materials, notebooks, toiletries and toys.
Hoping you will join the numerous people across the world in celebrating International Mandela Day!
