Germany Urges Swift EU Accession for Western Balkan Countries
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has issued a compelling call for the expedited integration of candidate countries from the Western Balkans into the European Union
The European Commission has submitted a proposal for the introduction of an additional system for border control of foreigners who have the right to travel to the EU without a visa, reported BTA.
The idea envisages foreigners who are free of the requirement for a Schengen visa to declare beforehand their intention of travelling on a website or via an electronic application. Filling in the application will take about ten minutes, while the travel permit should be issued almost immediately. The permit will be valid for 5 years and will cost EUR 5.
The system proposed by the EC is called ETIAS and it will collect information on all citizens of states outside the EU who travel visa-free to the European Union so that preliminary checks may be carried out of illegal migration and security-wise.
The checks of passengers will be carried out by an automated system. When the system submits a signal for a violation (threats to security or public health, or illegal migration), security services will carry out an additional estimate.
Border control officers will have the last word. They can decide whether to let in or decline entry to the EU to passengers who have arrived at the external border of the EU.
