Tsvetan Tsvetanov, a former Interior Minister, is tipped to head the Internal Affairs Committee with Bulgaria's Parliament, after a plenary vote on Friday.
His candidacy has been signed by the majority of lawmakers and is expected to be put to a vote on Friday, Dnevnik.bg reports.
Tsvetanov, who is considered to be the driving force behind the main governing GERB party's local structures across the country and has a key role in organizing election campaigns, is expected to take over from Atanas Atanasov, who left the Chairman's office vacant after DSB, the party he is a member of, moved into opposition in December.
In January, a court acquitted Tsvetanov of the third and last charge against him. Over the last several yeats he has been tried for blocking the use of special surveillance equipment, embezzlement, and allowing unlawful wiretapping.
