Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
According to the draft Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) report, the European Commission will be mostly positive in its assessment of Bulgarian reforms in justice and internal affairs.
The report, which will be officialy unveiled on Wednesday, is expected to be most critical towards the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS).
However it will note the progress made in the reform of the judiciary, with the focus no longer being on the fight against organised crime as had been previously.
One of the important conclusions is that following the legislative changes made in different fields, it is important to achieve results and implement the recommendations made in the previous report, which are still in force.
The European Commission welcomes the anti-corruption and judicial reform strategies and backs the idea that Bulgaria should be aided by European experts in its judicial reform.
The report recommends more checks on the activities of the prosecution, noting the need to make the chief prosecutor and individual prosecutors more accountable.
The European Commission commends Bulgaria for the renewal of reforms in 2015 after the stagnation in the previous years and also assesses positively the work of the specialized court and prosecution.
The report identifies as positive steps the selection of a chief judicial inspector and the improvements made to the random allocation of cases.
The document also notes that although the adopted amendments to the constitution concerning the reform of the judiciary differ to those initially proposed, an important step towards the reform of VSS has been made.
