Work on joint large-scale energy projects is expected to be on the agenda of a meeting between the presidents of Russia and Turkey in Baku on 13 June, the Kremlin said on Thursday.
“Russia and Turkey remain very important partners in terms of trade, economy and investment, partners in major projects in various areas,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow on Thursday.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend the opening ceremony of the First European Games. The sports event will take place in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku from 12 June to 28 June.
“Using the opportunity that they both will be there, Putin and Erdogan have decided to meet separately the next morning,” Peskov said.
He didn’t mention explicitly Turkish Stream but it would be only natural for the two presidents to discuss progress in the Gazprom-led project to carry 63 billion cubic meters (bcm) of Russian gas per year to Turkey underneath the Black Sea.
Out of the total, Turkey will use 16 bcm to meet its domestic needs, while the remaining 47 bcm could be pumped to a future gas hub on Turkey’s border with Greece, for delivery to EU markets.
Peskov spoke about a week after Reuters reported that Gazprom plans to start laying pipes on the Black Sea bed by the end of June “although it has no firm agreement with Ankara and faces opposition from the EU”.
Russia may see its ambition to carry gas to Europe via Turkish Stream thwarted with the EU determined to cut its energy reliance on Russia and Turkey seeking big discounts for Russian gas in exchange for participating in the project, Reuters said.
Turkish Stream was unveiled last year as a replacement to the South Stream project abandoned by Moscow over objections from the European Commission.
