Bulgaria’s Kristalina Georgieva “has many wondering whether she might seek” to become United Nations Secretary General when Ban Ki-moon leaves office at the end of next year, politico.eu has said.
According to an article carried by the online edition on Wednesday, Georgieva, who has built a reputation as "a tough administrator" in her career, “is effectively the EU’s chief operating officer” in her current role as European Commission Vice President.
“The job of secretary-general has been expected to go to a candidate from Eastern Europe, but a UN diplomatic source says the eastern bloc countries have yet to mount an efficient campaign to secure the post,” the article reads. “They aren’t ready for all the necessary vote swaps” to win approval in the UN assembly.”
According to the UN diplomat, however, an important consideration is that a successful candidate would have to be “amenable to both Russia and the US.”
Georgieva had refused to comment on her future plans, politico.eu said.
