The project Urban Nomads will be aiming at improving living conditions for the homeless in Bulgaria, and the main focus will be put on people collecting and separating garbage across the streets.
''They can use everything they find on the streets in their everyday lives - whether they use it to build a shelter, or to bring it to a waste collection point,'' stated Mia Agova, one of the project participants in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio.
''In Bulgaria we also have a problem with the fact that we have only 1370 people registered because the rest have no personal identification documents,'' added another project member - Eleonor Genova. '' According to the unofficial data collected during the campaign of Mission Without Borders in 2013, more than 2600 homeless people have lived on the streets of Sofia over the winter.''
An additional problem seemed to be the illegal schemes for collecting properties from elderly people in key locations across Sofia, as well as their inability to pay off mortgages.
According to the data of homeless people assistance centers, their number has doubled in 2013. They are mostly people aged between 40 and 60, 10% of them had higher education, and 10% came from orphanages.
The project was initiated by grassroots social responsibility collective cause+effect, and will be executed in collaboration with NGOs Destructive Creation and Shtipka.
It will comprise of three main activities - creation of a mobile infrastructure ( mobile micro houses), created from waste materials, as well as mobile bathrooms and laundry rooms, there will be a detailed research into the homeless way of living, and social activities will be organized for them to feel more involved in their local communities.
The project will need further support from local businesses, NGOs and the authorities to remain active.
