Bulgarian prosecutors have brought criminal charges against a former senior BNB official for suspected failure to exercise proper control over operations of Corporate Commercial Bank (KTB).
Rumen Simeonov, who served as deputy governor of Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) in charge of the banking supervision department from 2007 to 2013, was charged with abuse of office.
Sofia City Prosecutor's Office charged on Tuesday Simeonov with failure to fulfill his duties, which are regulated in the Law on BNB and the Law on Credit Institutions, in the period 2010-2013.
A report of BNB's supervisory inspection from 2010 established breaches in the activity of KTB, which threatened the financial interests of the depositors at the bank.
Although Simeonov had been informed of the breaches, he did not take the necessary supervisory measures, the press service of the prosecutor's office informs.
According to the prosecutor's office, the crime was perpetrated with the aim to benefit the shareholders of KTB.
Tsvetan Gounev, who succeeded Simeonov as deputy governor of BNB in charge of the banking supervision department in 2013, has been charged with the same crimes.
Meanwhile, the Sofia City Court resumed the proceedings on the insolvency case of KTB and court hearings will be held on April 15.
